Building a Culture of Literacy: The Director's Role

Early childhood program leaders have a unique opportunity to influence how literacy is understood and experienced within their programs. Through intentional leadership, coaching, and support, directors can help educators recognize that meaningful literacy experiences are often already happening throughout the day. It is woven throughout children's relationships, play, conversations, caregiving routines, and everyday experiences. Every interaction provides an opportunity for children to develop language, communication, and early literacy skills.

This workshop is designed to support directors in developing practical strategies for coaching and supporting early childhood educators in creating literacy-rich environments and interactions. Participants will also explore ways to engage families in understanding the important role early literacy plays in children's overall development and lifelong learning.

Goals

Participants will move beyond viewing literacy as a separate activity and instead recognize it as an integral part of children's everyday experiences, relationships, play, and development. Participants will gain strategies for supporting the teams they lead in providing rich experiences that lead to the establishment of a programmatic culture of literacy.
